  3. Paul,

Thanks for inviting me to hear your podcast. I have found your ideas interesting and provocative since college and was excited to hear about this. However, I found your opening discussion of Christianity and slavery to be somewhat superficial: for more information on this topic, check out "The Civil War as a Theological Crisis" by Mark Noll. Also, while I also love Pope Francis, his comments on most of these issues are not really that different from his predecessors: http://catholicclimatecovenant.org/catholic-teachings/vatican-messages/

I really enjoyed your discussion of feminism and family policy, however. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Braxton!

Thanks so much for listening and commenting. I respect your perspective a lot, and I hope you remain part of the conversation. You're right that I wasn't nuanced enough. I should have mentioned the Christianity of the abolitionists. But my overall point is that The Bible and The Quran are deeply problematic texts—buffets from which the moderates and the fundamentalists can take whatever they like. Yet I do concede that these texts can be counterweights to dangerous secularist utopian fantasies. Douthat had a great column about this today, which I'm sure you read. Please keep commenting! This is a freewheeling podcast, and sometimes we'll miss things, and I hope you'll correct us when we do. Cheers.

  5. Joel, thanks for your comments. It was great to see you last week. Funny how being a Catholic would probably be an advantage in an election now, if anything. And I agree that working at home is working, and something to take pride in.
